Staining the Score

Staining the Score

Staining the Score is an exceptional project that showcases the culmination of the dancers' efforts throughout the choreographic experiments they undertook while creating Adaptation.  Working closely with the dancers, we generated and conceptualized artistic ideas from various sources of inspiration, which we then transformed into movements for creative expression.  The dancers collectively approached the stimuli (objects-canvas and paint), resulting in a beautiful multiple-authored work that cut and mixed materials, empowering contributors and transforming personal philosophy.

Despite coming from different backgrounds and experiences, the dancers soon realized that creativity in choreography is not necessarily based on historically determined explicitly but through playful thinking.  The process became a shared agency that enabled them to learn and grow together throughout their engagement. The composition process was akin to painting on a canvas, with unforeseeable shifts in landscapes that were practiced and experienced while sharing learned conceptual information through acts of doing.

In summary, Staining the Score is a collaborative dance where learning takes place through the process of doing and making, allowing the dancers to execute what emerges from the methods and practice.  It is an exceptional work that showcases the capacity to perceive visually, think with the body, internalize, and process action to be transported externally.
